The Big Question: Repair or Replace?
If you have an aging deck, you've probably wondered: Should I invest in repairs, or is it time for a complete replacement?
Quick Self-Assessment
Check the Structure (Most Important)
- Push firmly on railing posts — Any movement?
- Bounce on different areas — Feel any soft spots?
- Examine ledger board — Signs of rot?
Check the Surface
- Walk barefoot — Feel splinters or rough spots?
- Probe boards with screwdriver — Does it sink easily?
When Repair Makes Sense
- Less than 25% of boards are damaged
- Structure is solid
- Deck is under 10 years old
When Replacement Is Better
- Structural damage exists
- More than 50% of boards are damaged
- Deck is 15+ years old
